One Month on Instagram – English Country Summer

Lychgate

I joined instagram as @oldandbritish at the start of September to share all of the beautiful things I come across on a day to day basis, from cute country cottages to beautiful gardens, pretty things picked up at different stores to rejoicing over a late English country summer etc. Fortunately, there are a lot of people out there who share my tastes and I, very fortunately and unexpectedly, gained more than 100 followers in the first three weeks – a huge thank you to my followers, I really appreciate it, and hopefully we can keep sharing more idyllic scenes over the coming months and years – a definite antidote to the horrors of international news. Here is a quick review of September:

As well as sharing a proclivity for bourbons and baskets, followers helped me identify various flowers (from Harebells to Chinese Lanterns), and the particular name of this style of garden gate; a design originating in English churchyards over the proceeding centuries:

Fortunately, after a lacklustre summer, we were treated to a mini summer in England, thanks to a sudden last gasp waft of warm air and sunshine. It meant September was perhaps the nicest summer month this year. I tried to make the most of it before autumn took hold, with walks by the canal and admiring all the beautiful flowers still in bloom . It’s nice to have some photographic reminders of the English country summer we enjoyed, it now seems hard to believe that was only a few weeks ago.
